A Quantum Leap in Information Technologies

The quantum revolution will not happen by itself – someone has to build it. At the Center for Hybrid Quantum-Classical Information Technologies QLAB, we fuse breakthrough quantum technologies with the classical digital infrastructure the world runs on, creating solutions that travel straight from the laboratory into the economy: secure communication, energy-efficient computing, and ultra-sensitive measurement. Together with Europe’s leading scientific and technology partners, we are building the continent’s technological sovereignty – discovery by discovery, deployment by deployment.

Research Areas

Great ideas too often stay on paper. That is why QLAB operates as an “innovation loop” that closes the full cycle: from theory and algorithms, through proprietary photonic hardware, to demonstrators tested in the real networks and laboratories of our partners. Here, every discovery has a route to application.

Our research is carried out by four specialized Research Groups:

Quantum-Safe Communication

Led by Prof. M. Stobińska-Moretto, we build communication whose security is guaranteed by the laws of physics rather than by trust in devices. We develop device-independent and semi-device independent protocols (DI QKD & semi-DI QKD) and hybrid quantum–post-quantum cryptography – the foundation for protecting wide-area networks, critical infrastructure, and the future quantum internet. We also advance post-quantum cryptography (PQC) and cryptanalysis, stress-testing the resilience of new solutions against classical and quantum attacks – before adversaries do.

Quantum Communication Infrastructure and Photonic Information Processing

Led by Dr. M. Karpiński, we engineer advanced photonic components and integrate them with both quantum and ICT systems. Our work involves developing highly efficient quantum light sources, advanced detection technologies, and programmable circuits, alongside testing protocols in real-world environments.

Quantum Imaging and Metrology

Led by Dr. R. Łapkiewicz, we advance multimode photonic platforms that surpass classical limits in imaging and metrology. We pioneer novel techniques, such as super-resolution microscopy. Our ultimate goal is to deliver quantum microscopy systems tailored for biomedical and industrial applications.

Quantum Computing and Artificial Intelligence

We develop hybrid quantum algorithms and neuromorphic systems – from generative models to autonomous agents – optimized for today’s quantum processors. The result: the quantum software and photonic processors of the future, consuming less energy than their classical counterparts. An international search for the group leader is under way – join us!

A Robust Ecosystem, Global Opportunities

The journey from discovery to product takes more than a good idea: it takes stable funding, unique infrastructure, and a network of partners. QLAB was launched with a PLN 30 million (~€7 million) grant from the International Research Agendas programme of the Foundation for Polish Science, financed by the European Funds for Smart Economy. The center’s further growth is supported by successive national and European grants, won in competitive calls.

Our scientists’ participation in flagship initiatives – the Quantum Flagship, EuroHPC, and EuroQCI – means more to us than funding: these are strategic partnerships that place us at the very heart of the European innovation ecosystem. With these resources, we are building key photonic infrastructure, creating working demonstrators, and accelerating the transfer of technology to the economy. These are the investments that make the promise of the quantum revolution tangible.

Foundation for Polish Science (FNP)

Poland’s largest non-governmental institution supporting science and the primary funding source of our pioneering research. Thanks to the International Research Agendas grant, financed by EU funds, we are expanding our unique laboratory infrastructure, building advanced demonstrators, and effectively bringing quantum technologies to the market. Three new Centers of Excellence at the University of Warsaw

Over PLN 90 million for breakthrough innovations. The University of Warsaw has launched three new research centres funded by the Foundation for Polish Science under the International Research Agendas Programme. Prof. Paweł Dłotko, Prof. Ryszard Buczyński, and Prof. Magdalena Stobińska-Moretto will lead teams focusing on trustworthy AI for life sciences, structured optical fibres, and hybrid quantum technologies.
